Real Women Run
Real Women Run empowers women to participate fully in public life and leadership through elected political office at all levels, appointments to public boards and commissions, working on campaigns, or simply learning more about our system.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 data, 49.8% of the population in Utah is female; yet in 2013, the proportion of women in the Utah State Legislature will be just 15.4% with a mere 5 female Senators and 11 female Representatives. The result is a grim 44th national ranking based on the proportion of female members in the state legislature. Utah also lacks both a female representative in Congress and in statewide elected office. Despite this gross imbalance, statistics show that women running for office win elections at the same rate as men, but even nationwide, fewer women choose to take the initial step to run for office.
Real Women Run is a collaborative nonpartisan initiative to empower women to participate fully in public life and civic leadership through elected political office at all levels, appointments to boards and commissions, participation in campaigns, and engagement in the political system.
Founded in 2011, Real Women Run partners include the YWCA Utah, Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, Vision 2020, Salt Lake Community College, AAUW, League of Women Voters of Utah, Women Lawyers (Utah Bar Association), Utah Women and Leadership Project at Utah Valley University, Olene Walker Institute of Politics at Weber State University, Utah State University, Women’s Leadership Institute, current and former elected officials from major political parties, and community members.
